Ocean View Road Matiatia end – Parking Update Sept 9 2011
Written by cujimi on September 8, 2011
The recent upgrade of Ocean View Rd, in the vicinity of Matiatia Wharf, has revealed that the bank on the south side of the road is inherently unstable. This is being aggravated by the weight of vehicles and the road is starting to deteriorate.
Therefore, it is the view of Auckland Transport engineers that this side of the road is no longer a safe parking option. In addition, there have been a number of near misses involving cyclists and motorists and this has prompted an urgent assessment of how Ocean View Road can be improved for all road users.
The first and foremost urgent safety measure is the removal of the south side parking on the road and its replacement with additional off-road parking at the Owhanake car-park.
From this week, 45 spaces will be removed permanently from the south side but they will be replaced immediately with the opening of 60 safer, parking spaces at Owhanake. A new, more convenient, pedestrian access-way into the car-park is also being constructed. Importantly, all the car parks on the north side (ie.adjacent to the footpath) of Ocean View Road will remain as they are now.
This is the first of a number of measures Auckland Transport will be taking to improve safety on Ocean View Road. While the majority are safety orientated, others are simply designed to make this ‘gateway’ to the Island easier and better to use for everyone – motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and, of course, visitors.
There will be more news to come, and we will be communicating through updates such as this, Waiheke local media and through the Waiheke Local Board.
