Written by on January 7, 2011

This weeks Variations is brought to you by the numbers 1,2,4 and 8.  Today I’m going to be playing symphonic music from symphonies 1,2,4 and 8 of Beethoven. Just about everybody recognises the opening da da da dum of this fifth symphony, a huge number of people love the final choral setting of Schillers Ode to Joy in the 9th, many folks know the 6th Pastoral Symphony, the funeral march from the 3rd and the enormously powerful second movement of the 7th symphony …. but what about 1,2,4,and 8 – well its time for these poor cousins to go to the ball..
So in this show I’m going to play you some movements from these lesser knownsymphonies and each symphony will be played by a different orchestra and conductor in different perfornance including tradtional germanic big orchestral, period instrument, and Historically-Informed Performance (HIP) styles
