Rain brings Destruction

Written by on January 28, 2011

Two Waiheke women are lucky to be alive, narrowly escaping their home moments before it slid to destruction on Onetangi Beach. The iconic Waiheke bach, dating to the 1920s, was completely destroyed when the hill it was situated on slipped during a 120mm rain storm.

The women were awoken when a retaining wall above the house splintered and their dog started barking, alerting them to the danger. They fled the house as it crashed down the hill behind them.

The women were renting the property which is owned the person who also owns a large recently developed property immediately above the bach.

The storm caused many slips around the island. Access to Palm Beach via Palm Rd was also blocked by a large landslide.
