Variations Playlist for 26th Feb 2012 – The Sixteen

Written by on February 25, 2012

My theme for today is The Sixteen, which is a United Kingdom-based choir and period instrument orchestra; founded by Harry Christophers in 1979 and still conducted by him.

The Sixteen has been a regular at major concert halls and festivals worldwide for over 30 years.  The group performs early English polyphony, works of the Renaissance, Baroque and early Classical music and a diversity of 20th century music. They have a huge discography of over 100 recordings and in fact they have launched their own label for releasing music.

The reason for selecting them as my theme topic, beyond the fact that they produce outstanding music, is that they are visiting New Zealand as part of the International Arts Festival and are performing 2 concerts in Wellington, though sadly not Auckland.  Anyway, due to time constraints I have not been able to record my usual track notes so instead you are just going to hear around an hour if uninterrupted music with no interjections by me.  The tracks cover the full range of The Sixteen’s repertoire, and follow a roughly chronological format, going from the renaissance to the late 20th Century.
